Speak THEIR Foreign Language-It Matters!
You know what they say—”When in Rome, do as the Romans do.” Always greet your Concierge, driver, hotel maid or salesperson in their country’s tongue. It is rude to expect someone in a foreign country to speak your language if that is not the language of the country you are visiting. Obviously, learning a new language seems difficult and time consuming but, truthfully, if you can begin with a proper greeting and simply make an effort to speak their language, this gesture will go a long way. If you sincerely try to speak in the country’s language, the person you are trying to communicate with will more than half the time try to meet you halfway. If you prefer English, quite often you will be surprised when people around the world will peg you for an English speaker and try to speak in English. Expecting someone to speak English in a foreign country may persuade a foreigner who speaks English to remain silent and ignore your needs and wants. Be polite, appropriate and compassionate; it goes a long way. If nothing else, smile and attempt to greet in that country’s language, even if you embarrass yourself. People around the world love a good laugh. Learn how to say please and thank you, and you may bridge the communication gap.
