Out of Town Safety Tips for Women
When you arrive at a new destination take the time to:
Observe – take stock of your surroundings
Orient – e.g. in your hotel room, be sure you keep the hotel name, address, room# etc. available and close to hotel phone/mobile
Decide – how will you respond to a threat. (safest location, exit etc.)
Act – take action based on your decision.
As a tourist – how you present yourself is important – be aware, confident and blend (don’t wear clothing and jewelry that pegs you as a tourist).
If attacked:
Stun – use a weapon of opportunity (keys, pen, purse etc.) or your fist and aim for assailants face (eyes, nose, temple).
Disable – attack groin, knees, instep)
Run – get to a safe place, or at least create distance between you and the attacker
911 – call for help (even if you are not sure of your exact location – keep the phone open so the police can determine your coordinates
Trust your instincts! Fear is a gift. Use it to take the actions listed above to protect yourself
.
